Professor Simon Platt is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon who specialises exclusively in conditions of the foot and ankle. He provides expert surgical and non-surgical care to patients across the Gold Coast, Brisbane, and Northern New South Wales from his practice at Coast Foot and Ankle Surgery.
Professor Platt graduated from the University of Bristol Medical School in the United Kingdom in 1993. After completing a year teaching anatomy at the University of Liverpool, he commenced broad-based surgical training covering all aspects of surgery before specialising in orthopaedics in 1999.
He gained Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery (FRCS) in 2004, and was subsequently awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in Orthopaedic Surgery in 2019. He has been practising as an independent consultant foot and ankle orthopaedic surgeon since 2005.
He is currently the President of the Australian Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgery Society, having previously served as the scientific secretary.
Unlike many orthopaedic surgeons who treat a broad range of musculoskeletal conditions, Professor Platt dedicates 100% of his practice to the foot and ankle. This means he sees a high volume of foot and ankle cases each year, giving him the depth of experience needed to manage everything from common conditions like bunions and plantar fasciitis to complex reconstructive ankle surgery and total ankle replacement.
Professor Platt understands that facing surgery or a new diagnosis can be stressful. He takes a patient-first approach, ensuring you have the time and space to ask questions and fully understand your options. He will explain your condition in plain language, outline both surgical and non-surgical treatment pathways, and work with you to develop a treatment plan tailored to your goals and lifestyle.
Whether you have been living with chronic foot pain, suffered an acute injury, or have been referred by your GP for a specialist opinion, Professor Platt and his team will ensure you receive the highest standard of care from your very first appointment.
Professor Platt is actively involved in orthopaedic research and has contributed to the advancement of foot and ankle surgery through peer-reviewed publications, international conference presentations, and collaborative research projects. His research interests span ankle fracture management, total ankle replacement outcomes, hallux valgus correction techniques, and Achilles tendon repair.
His published work includes studies on the biomechanics of ankle fracture fixation, outcomes of total ankle replacement, the management of complex hindfoot deformity, and postoperative rehabilitation protocols. Professor Platt has presented at major national and international orthopaedic conferences including the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (BOFAS), the Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA), and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS).
Professor Platt holds academic appointments at both Bond University and Griffith University on the Gold Coast, where he contributes to medical education and surgical research. He has been awarded competitive research grants including the Gold Coast Hospital Foundation, and has supervised higher-degree research students investigating foot and ankle conditions.
Throughout his career, Professor Platt has been deeply committed to surgical education and training. He began his teaching career as a Demonstrator in Anatomy at the University of Liverpool, where he taught medical students in the dissecting room and developed a lasting passion for education.
Today, Professor Platt holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education. He is an accredited supervisor and trainer for orthopaedic registrars through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) and serves as a clinical supervisor for medical students at both Bond University and Griffith University.
He has played a key role in the design and delivery of surgical skills courses, including instructing at Trauma courses and BOFAS workshops.
His commitment to education extends to mentoring junior surgeons and contributing to curriculum development in orthopaedic surgery training programs across Australia and the United Kingdom. This dedication to teaching means Professor Platt is always at the forefront of the latest evidence-based techniques and surgical innovations – knowledge he brings directly to the care of his patients.
